International Women’s Day Quotes on Our Day to Rise

International Women’s Day Quotes

I don’t know about you but I love a good motivational quote. When I’m having a rough time, I like to think about one of my favourite ever quotes from the wonderful Michelle Obama – “Every scar you have is a reminder not only that you got hurt, but that you survived”. If I’ve had a bad day at work or I’m feeling like I’m not the mum I want to be I think about her and this quote. Sometimes it’s what gets me out of bed in the morning. She is such an inspiration to me, and I think if Michelle can do it then so can I. So in celebration I’ve put together a collection of International Women’s Day quotes to help inspire you on our day to rise.

There is a sunset in the background where the sky gradually changes colour vertically from a turquoise blue to a pink-orange colour. On top of the image are the words Nothing can dim the light that shines from within - Maya Angelou

International Women’s Day – What’s it all about?

Before I get into my favourite quotes I thought I’d share some of the history of how this day came to be. These days International Women’s Day (as the name would suggest) is celebrated all over the world. It’s a day of global celebration where we all call for gender equality. The great thing about International Women’s Day is that no one organisation is responsible for it. Generally there is a theme for the day, this year it’s #PressForProgress.

The World Economic Forum’s 2017 Global Gender Gap Report says that we’re still over 200 years away from equality! So we need to make sure that we don’t get complacent and keep pushing for women’s rights and gender parity. Over the past few months the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns have brought sexual assault to the forefront of our minds, and we need to put that momentum to good use and ensure that it becomes a rarity, not the common occurrence it seems to have been over the decades.

International Women’s Day has been around in some way since the 1900’s.

In 1909 the first National Women’s Day took place in the USA, backed by the Socialist Party of America, on 23rd Feb. It continued to be celebrated on the last Sunday in February until 1913.

In 1913 that International Women’s Day was moved to 8th March and has been marked on that day ever since. International Women’s Day became a day for women all across Europe to get together and to protest against the war and on behalf of other causes. In 1914 there was march in London to support women’s suffrage.

In 1975 International Women’s Day was celebrated by the United Nations and in 1996 it started choosing a theme for each year.

As I mentioned before this year it’s ‘Press For Progress’; in recent years it’s been ‘Equality for Women is Progress for All’ and ‘Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030’. So the underlying message is the same, equality for women, but the chosen themes give it a focus for each year.

A Day of Reflection

For me International Women’s Day is a day to reflect on how far women’s rights have come, but also to think about how far we have still to go until we reach true equality. Though today is a day to celebrate women, the fight for equality won’t be over until ALL people are equal. That includes people of all ages, genders, sexualities and races.

My International Women’s Day Quotes

There will be days when you’re full of self doubt. There may be days when you think you can’t face the day. You think you’re too fat, too thin, not pretty enough. And that’s OK. No-one is perfect, we’re all flawed in some way – it’s what makes us human. The important thing is that you pick yourself up, dust yourself down and keep going. Nothing worth having comes easily.

  1. Love all these. I’ve seen many of them quoted today as I’ve been involved in #PressforProgress, #ThisisMe and some other campaigns around International Womens Day. I was at a launch event for a Womens Network in my day job too. Such inspiring quotes. Inspiring women. I wish there could be this much buzz everyday. Equality of opportunity and parity of pay for all is essential. #BloggerClubUK

Yeah, IWD can be bittersweet like that. There’s a huge buzz when the day comes around showing that we can get people talking about women’s right and gender and pay parity. Then in the following days it’s almost as if normality resumes and we’re back to where we were, which is a bit depressing. Thanks for reading 🙂

It was important for me to talk about history because I didn’t know how IWD came to be, as we know it, until I went researching for this post. Thanks for reading 🙂
